چکیده

AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars belong to a class of ultra-compact, short period binaries with spectra dominated largely by helium. SDSS J0926+3624 is of particular interest as it is the first observed eclipsing AM CVn system. We observed SDSS J0926+3624 with the Array Camera for Optical to Near-IR Spectrophotometry (ARCONS) at the Palomar 200” telescope. ARCONS uses a relatively new type of energyresolved photon counters called Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs). ARCONS, sensitive to radiation from 350 to 1100 nm, has a time resolution of several microseconds and can measure the energy of a photon to ∼10%. We present the light curves for these observations and examine changes in orbital period from prior observations. Using a quadratic ephemeris model, we measure a period rate of change Ṗ = (3.07±0.56)×10. In addition, we use the high timing resolution of ARCONS to examine the system’s high frequency variations and search for possible quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). Finally, we use the instrument’s spectral resolution to examine the light curves in various wavelength bands. We do not find any high frequency QPOs or significant spectral variability throughout an eclipse.

SDSS J0926+3624: the shortest period eclipsing binary star

With orbital periods of the order of tens of minutes or less, the AM Canum Venaticorum stars are ultracompact, hydrogen-deficient binaries with the shortest periods of any binary subclass, and are expected to be among the strongest gravitational wave sources in the sky. To date, the only known eclipsing source of this type is the P = 28 min binary SDSS J0926+3624. We present multiband, high tim...

SDSS J 0926 + 3624 , the first eclipsing AM CVn star , as seen with ULTRACAM

We present light curves of SDSS J0926+3624, the first eclipsing AM CVn star, observed with the high-speed CCD camera ULTRACAM on the WHT. We find unusually that the accreting white dwarf is only partially eclipsed by its companion. Apart from this, the system shows the classic eclipse morphology displayed by eclipsing dwarf novae, namely the eclipse of a white dwarf and accretion disc followed ...

Orbital periods of cataclysmic variables identified by the SDSS . IV . SDSSJ

We present time-series VLT spectroscopy and NTT photometry of the cataclysmic variable SDSS J220553.98+115553.7, which contains a pulsating white dwarf. We determine a spectroscopic orbital period of Porb = 82.825 ± 0.089min from velocity measurements of the Hα emission line. A period analysis of the light curves reveals a dominant periodicity at Pphot = 44.779 ± 0.038min which is not related t...

Orbital periods of cataclysmic variables identified by the SDSS . II . Measurements for six objects , including two eclipsing systems

Continuing our work from Paper I (Southworth et al., 2006) we present mediumresolution spectroscopy and broad-band photometry of seven cataclysmic variables (CVs) discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For six of these objects we derive accurate orbital periods, all which are measured for the first time. For SDSS J013132.39−090122.2, which contains a non-radially pulsating white dwarf, we ...

Orbital periods of cataclysmic variables identified by the SDSS . V . VLT , NTT and Magellan observations of nine equatorial systems

We present VLT and Magellan spectroscopy and NTT photometry of nine faint cataclysmic variables (CVs) which were spectroscopically identified by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We measure orbital periods for five of these from the velocity variations of the cores and wings of their Hα emission lines. Four of the five have orbital periods shorter than the 2–3hour period gap observed in the known p...
